One of the most common myths in the Workday ecosystem is that great professionals know everything. Every module. Every edge case. Every release note. The reality is very different.

In this episode of Workday Gold, I sat down with Stephen Timmons, a senior HRIS analyst whose career started in HR operations and evolved into deep Workday ownership. Like many of us, he didn’t plan a “Workday career.” He followed curiosity, raised his hand, and learned by doing.

We talked about what it’s really like to be the only Workday person in an organization. The upside is obvious, you touch everything. You learn fast. You see how the entire platform fits together. The downside is just as real, the pressure to have answers instantly, the risk of burnout, and the false belief that you should already know it all.

Stephen shared an important shift he had to make. Instead of answering questions immediately, he learned to slow down, test, and respond with intention. That mindset change alone can prevent bad configuration, rework, and unnecessary stress.

We also talked about the importance of community. LinkedIn, Reddit, user groups, and informal networks aren’t “nice to have.” They’re how Workday professionals survive and grow, especially when you’re on your own internally.

Finally, we explored how AI is changing the Workday role. Less manual work. More architectural thinking. More focus on why something exists and how it flows downstream.

If you’ve ever felt behind, overwhelmed, or like you’re supposed to know more than you do, this conversation will resonate.
