There’s been a lot of noise lately about AI “killing” ERP systems. It makes for a good headline, but it misses what’s actually happening on the ground.

In this episode of Workday Gold, Christian Delcid and I talked through a more realistic model. ERP systems are built on three layers: data, business logic, and the user interface. AI is clearly disrupting the UI first. Conversational interfaces and agents reduce the need for users to memorize navigation paths or click through complex menus.

What’s not disappearing anytime soon is the value Workday provides through security, data governance, and business logic. Protecting PII data, enforcing role-based access, and maintaining compliance across countries and regulations isn’t something you casually replace with a chatbot.

Where things get interesting is around the edges. Agents could handle workflows that span multiple systems, including onboarding, offboarding, validation, and document collection, and then update Workday via APIs. In some cases, functionality that once resided in full modules may instead become agent-driven workflows.

We also talked about pricing. Flex Credits aren’t just a Workday thing; they reflect a broader SaaS shift toward usage-based models. That creates flexibility, but it also introduces new budgeting and governance challenges that customers need to think about now, not just waiting to see what happens.

The biggest takeaway for me is this: the real value of AI today isn’t flashy demos. It’s eliminating boring, error-prone work so people can focus on judgment, strategy, and relationships.

If you want the full conversation, including practical examples and early 2026R1 observations, listen to the latest episode of Workday Gold.
