One of the things I love most about the Workday ecosystem is that no two careers look the same. In this episode of Workday Gold, I sat down with James Beattie, who has worked as a partner consultant, independent contractor, and internal product lead, and his journey highlights why that variety matters.
One major takeaway from our conversation is how transformative AMS experience can be. Supporting tenants after go-live forces you to deal with real problems, incomplete documentation, and design decisions you didn’t make. That perspective changes how you approach future implementations, because you’ve seen what breaks once the consultants leave.
James also shared something I think every Workday professional needs to hear: even after more than a decade, he still validates every idea or scenario in a tenant. Workday changes constantly, and confidence without testing is a fast path to mistakes. Prototyping isn’t a sign of inexperience; it’s a sign of maturity.
We also talked about scale, especially James’s time on Amazon’s Workday project. Large enterprises surface hard truths about ERP systems, performance limits, downtime tolerance, and cultural expectations around building vs. buying. Not every organization fits neatly into a single platform, and that’s okay.
Finally, James challenged a common fear around Workday releases. Many customers leave value on the table because they’re afraid to turn things on. With proper testing, the risk is often far lower than people assume.
If you want to hear the full story, including lessons from global deployments, massive data volumes, and product ownership inside a customer, I think you’ll enjoy the full episode.
